Completing a test

Testers log in to the Usability Exchange website to see tests that have been allocated to them. They can start a test at any time by selecting it from their list of tests:

New tests will be highlighted in their list of tests. The status of old tests, for example 'Testing started' or 'Testing complete', will also be shown

When a tester selects a test, they will be shown the number of tasks in the test and the payment they will receive for completing the test

When a user starts a test, they will be presented with one or more website tasks:

Prior to each task the tester will be shown a screen preparing them for the task ahead. For example, they will be told to approach the task in the same way that they would approach other website tasks they may come across when browsing the internet

When the tester clicks 'Continue' to start the task, they will be presented with task instructions and the website to be tested. The instructions and the website will appear in two separate windows or in a webpage frame with instructions in the top frame and the website to be tested in the bottom frame

The task that is presented to the user will vary according to the website being tested. The user could be asked to find a particular piece of text, complete a registration procedure or buy a particular product using the website shown. After attempting each task, the user will be asked a series of questions regarding the task:

For example the tester will be asked to describe any problems they may have experienced while trying to complete the task

When all tasks have been attempted and all questions have been answered, the user is paid:

The tester will be told that appropriate funds have been credited to their account for the test that they have completed
